In this self drive you will see the best of Scandinavia in the same tour. After exploring Stockholm you drive north to Dalarna where you visit locations like the Nusnäs Dala Horse workshop and the fashinating Dalhalla day mine. You drive over the Norwegian border where you will explore beautiful fjord landscapes, waterfalls and national parks before arriving in Denmark where you stroll along the famous Ströget avenue and enjoy a Danish beer just like the locals.
Day 1: Arrival/Stockholm (Sweden)
This tour starts at the airport, where you are met and transferred to your accommodation in the heart of Stockholm. If you arrive early, we recommend getting the Stockholm Card, which gives you access to most museums in Stockholm, the Stockholm underground and local buses. Stay the night in Stockholm.
Day 2: Stockholm (Sweden)
Spend the day in the capital, Stockholm. Stockholm can easily be considered one of most beautiful capital cities in the world, with amazing palaces, museums, restaurants and parks. Stockholm is also a very hip destination known for its innovative design, fashion and music scene. Take a 2.5-hour Stockholm Sightseeing Tour, viewing the most significant places in the capital, including the Old Town and Djurgården, the king’s ancient hunting grounds or do the sightseeing on your own. Stay the night in Stockholm.
Day 3: Stockholm-Borlänge (Sweden)
Drive north to Uppsala to see Uppsala Cathedral, Scandinavia’s largest cathedral. Stay the night in Borlänge. Driving distance approx. 230km.
Day 4: Borlänge-Röros (Norway)
Start the day with a visit at the Gammelgården outdoor museum. With its 34 buildings this is the largest exhibition of old buildings in original surroundings in Sweden. Here you find everything between stone age findings to 18th century farms and a school museum. Next we head for the Norwegian border to explore the mountain and mining town of Røros. Røros mines were closed in 1977, but the town is still a thriving community where a rich culture and traditions are kept alive. In 1982 this charming town was added to the UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Stay the night in Røros. Driving distance approx. 415km.
Day 5: Røros-Lom (Norway)
From Røros you head for Dombås, on a scenic drive between the two national parks of Dovrefjell and Rondane. When reaching Dombås you head south in the Gudbrandsdalen Valley, before you turn west in Otta. From Otta it is only an hour- long drive to your destination Lom, just nearby the Jotunheimen National Park. The Jotunheimen area is one of Norways most popular destinations for recreation and nature adventure, and the hiking options are endless. In the Lom- area you can also go rafting, horseback riding and canoeing. If you feel like a swim or just to relax, the unique outdoor swimming pool at Dønfoss is also well worth visiting. Stay the night in the Lom area. Driving distance approx. 260km.
Day 6: Lom- Sogndal area (Norway)
Today you can choose between a shorter drive over Sognefjell and a longer one over Strynefjell on your way south to Norway’s longest fjord, Sognefjorden. Driving over Sognefjell, the highest mountain passage in Norway and the country’s first official tourist road is truly an amazing experience, and will also give you some extra time at your next destination. Taking the longer road over Strynefjell, originally built in 1895, you will also be driving one of Norway’s official tourist roads, no less impressive than the one over Sognefjell. This route also gives you another exciting opportunity; drive by famous Geiranger and take the ferry on the Geirangerfjord to Hellesylt, from where you can continue south to the Sogndal area. Stay the night in the Sogndal area. Driving distance approx. 400km.
Day 7: Sogndal area- Bergen (Norway)
On your way to Norway’s second largest city, Bergen, you will be passing several small and charming fjord villages, such as Lærdal, Aurland, Flåm and Gudvangen. A good suggestion would be to visit Flåm in the bottom of the beautiful Aurlandsfjorden, to experience the truly enjoyable train ride between Flåm and Myrdal. Your journey will then continue as you head on to Voss and finally Bergen. Stay the night in Bergen. Driving distance approx. 240km.
Day 8: Bergen- Geilo (Norway)
Bergen is a wonderful city, full of life and culture. In this “must-visit” city, you will find Bryggen, listed by Unesco as a World Heritage site; exceptional old houses; a vibrant fish and flower market; cable cars offering stunning views; great museums; dynamic culture, and more. After spending the first part of the day exploring Bergen, you will be heading east for beautiful Hardangerfjorden. After crossing the fjord at Bruravik- Brimnes you will start the climb up to Hardangervidda, also a Norwegian National Park, on your way to charming Geilo. Stay the night in Geilo. Driving distance approx. 240km.
Day 9: Geilo- Oslo (Norway)
Leave Geilo around noon and start the drive through the Hallingdal Valley on your way to Oslo, the capital of Norway. On this scenic drive, you will pass delightful ski centres, and travel through beautiful forested dales and plateaus. In Oslo, you can spend the rest of the day visiting Frognerparken, the Holmenkollen ski jumping arena, or just relax and enjoy a good meal at one of the capital’s many fabulous restaurants. Stay the night in Oslo. Driving distance approx. 240km.
Day 10: Oslo (Norway)- Gothenburg (Sweden)
Start the day by driving over the boarders to Sweden. Explore the impressive flight of locks at Trollhättan, consistsing of four locks, covering a 32-metre difference in water level, and how the boats are guided through the canal system, before driving along the riverbanks of Göta älv River to Gothenburg. Make sure you don’t miss the Bohus Fort by the Göta älv River, north of the city. You will spend the night in Gothenburg, the second largest city in Sweden. Driving distance approx. 295km.
Day 11: Gothenburg (Göteborg)-Copenhagen (Denmark)
Start the day by taking a tour around Gothenburg, maybe one of the boat sightseeing tours offered. Before entering the city of Helsingborg you make a stop at Sofiero Palace & Garden. Here you will find historical parks and gardens, famous for its collection of rhododendrons. Take the ferry, 20 minutes, from Helsingborg to Helsingør in Denmark. In Helsingør you take a stroll around the pretty town and visit the Kronborg Castle, World famous from Shakespeares Hamlet. Continue along the sea shore to Copenhagen where you spend the night. Driving distance approx. 270km.
Day 12: Copenhagen (Denmark)
Today you have the whole day to explore the Danish capital. One of the best ways to see Copenhagen is by water, sightseeing boats make tours of various duration around the city. A must when in Copenhagen is a visit to The Little Mermaid, a bronze statute from a Hans Christian Andersen story, beautifully located out on the water. Also visit Amalienborg, the four royal mansions, garded by the Royal Life Guard stationed outside each of the residences. Exhibits showing how three generations of the monarchy lived here from the 19th century.
Nyhavn is famous for its many restaurants and a lively nightlife, during summertime you will find seats outside as well as inside. Stay the night in Copenhagen.
Day 13: Copenhagen – The Kingdom of Crystal (Sweden)
Drive over the Öresund Bridge back to Sweden. Take a look around Ystad, with its many small, half-timbered houses, before driving east to Ales Stenar, Ale’s Stones—a giant stone formation more than 1,000 years old; its high location by the south coast makes it one of the most visited sites in Skåne. As you drive along the coast, you should not miss Glimmingehus, one of the best-preserved medieval forts (manors) in Scandinavia, dating back to 1499, and the National Park Stenshuvud, which offers rich flora and many exciting animal species. The Swedish Punsch museum is an interesting place to visit, containing exhibits from one of the two largest Punsch factories in the 1800s. Drive north to the “Kingdom of Crystal” (Glasriket), where you will spend the night. Driving distance approx. 300km.
Day 14: The Kingdom of Crystal (Glasriket) – Linköping (Sweden)
Drive around the “Kingdom of Crystal” (Glasriket) and visit some of its most famous glassworks. There are more than 50 glassworks in this area, and many of them are open to visitors. If you are lucky, you can find a special gift or souvenir in one of the glasswork stores which offer good prices. Drive north to Vimmerby and visit the hometown of Swedish author Astrid Lindgren. Here you will find a specially built village for Pippi Longstocking and other famous characters featured in her books. Make a stop in Linköping and visit the open-air museum “Old Linköping,” which shows what a small town looked like a hundred years ago. You can visit the houses and see how Swedish people lived in the old days. Stay the night in Linköping. Driving distance approx. 245km.
Day 15: Linköping - Stockholm (Sweden)
On your way back to Stockholm, we recommend visiting the pretty little town of Trosa by the coastline, and the 18th-century Tullgarn Castle, which features some of the most beautiful interiors from the period. Stay the night in Stockholm. Driving distance approx. 420km.
Day 16: Departure
Transfer from Stockholm by Arlanda Express to Arlanda airport. Passengers departing with the afternoon flight will have time for some last-minute shopping, a perfect way to end your holiday.
